Musical Motivation: I Need Your Help!
I’m all over talking about motivation this week, aren’t I? Maybe it’s because lately, with the cold weather and general hustle and bustle of the season I’ve needed a little extra to get my butt to the gym. Well friends, today I need your help in getting motivated. I’m headed home to Michigan for a few days for the holidays, but I still plan on getting my workouts in. However, I won’t really have access to all of the equipment I’m used to, so I’m going to need an extra push in the form of music to get me sweating. This is where you come in: what has been your JAM lately to work out to? What’s your fave tune for cardio? Strength? I plan on doing a little browsing on iTunes later, so tell me which songs absolutely make your sweat sessions. I love all kinds of music except country (that totally sounds like my old Facebook profile), so give me what you’ve got! I’d love to hear it!

Cheesy as hell or not, I get my second wind when I hear Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ (shut up, yes I’m old) come on the ol shuffle. Also ‘I Turn to You’ by Mel C just has a great beat to run to. I don’t really listen to music while I lift, I find the headphones/cord/strap around my arm distracting and gets in the way.
The new Girl Talk album is amazing!
I’ve heard! I need to get on that ASAP.
I’m totally spending the holidays making a mix for several people (I’ve over extended myself in promises for mixes). Luckily they’re all athletes and so my theme is going to be “I can’t even run straight” and it’s going to be all LGBT artists. Let me know if you want a copy.
Otherwise I love Tegan and Sara (The Con is their best album) and I love working out to slow songs (my theory: I run slowly because I run as if I’m in an 80s video montage) so Brandi Carlile is a favorite. Also Guns n’ Roses. Their greatest hits album is pretty amazing.
OMG, I would love a copy of that! That sounds awesome! And thanks for the other suggestions too!
Dancing with Myself by Billy Idol is sometimes the only song that can keep me going. It’s just perfect.
I’m a biiiiiiiiig fan of “Magic” by B.o.B. and Rivers Cuomo — so upbeat, so happy, so good! I love running to it. Other good ones are “Remember the Name” by Fort Minor (makes me feel like a total badass) and “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera (don’t laugh – it works). Also, anything ridiculously pop-y from the ’80s works like a charm — “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “Uptown Girl” worked wonders when I was running my marathon.
